Shutting Off the TV?

A noteworthy post from Erik Raymond:

“Several years back I heard John Piper say that he doesn’t have a television. My first thought was, “He is more of a freak than I thought.” My second thought was, “Poor kids.”

However, now the TV gets about as much attention in our house as the Christmas decorations. What happened? And why?”

and later…

“We ditched the TV a few months ago. Haven’t missed it one bit and saved us a few bucks every month. We have an iMac if the kids want to play a game. We also have Netflix if the kids want to watch something or if my wife and I want to watch a movie but the option to just channel surf is gone and that helps redeem the time in a huge way.”

He’s got some great points. This is the kind of thing we should really question and seriously consider as Christians.
